I think I actually prefer when a game dev who isn't great at art tries to draw the art anyway, rather than just using public domain art. Then it feels like the game has a lot more soul to it.
I keep recognizing https://opengameart.org/content/super-seasonal-platformer-tiles in different projects (including seeing a game prominently using it on the Switch eShop) and it feels weird. I know I also used it for a Second Life game.
I'll happily play something with "bad" graphics if someone on the development team drew them and the art is their own creativity and expression. When I play something I want to be immersed in the developers' creativity, and I want to feel like it's informed by the things they're trying to make me feel, or their best attempt at that anyway.
