During Art Fight I really really wanted to try and explore some of the GameCube library and embrace those aesthetics because I felt nostalgic about the GameCube, though I think the library kind of inherently has its own distinct style that was calling to me too. It has a lot of games that do something weird in their series that sticks out from previous games (Metroid playing with being a first person shooter, Zelda trying a very different visual style, Star Fox doing new gameplay styles) or later ones too (Mario Kart's gimmick that it never did again), and there were just a lot of weird experimental feeling games that do something fresh and new (the DK Bongos games, Chibi Robo, Pikmin, Animal Crossing).
Now Art Fight is over for this year and I can play all the cool GameCube games I want without feeling like maybe I should try and finish some last minute pictures. For whatever reason I wanted to play Wario World, which I kind of wanted to play as a kid but people told me it was too short and I guess I never did. There are a lot of games I never experienced back then, including Double Dash (unless I'm counting briefly trying it at McDonald's). So far I've played up to the second level of world 2. I guess I can kind of see how it builds on top of the gameplay the Wario Land games have, where you could stun, pick up, and throw enemies in order to do things. That's here, except this game expands it into things like grabbing onto an enemy and doing a spin move in order to turn gears.
I can also see where complaints about the game being short come from, with only 8 levels, though each level takes a good while to get through, especially if you're 100%ing the game. Also it's 2024 and I don't have the opportunity to buy this game new anymore anyway.
